BackgroundThe T-38 was designed as a trainer for the Avionics Squadron of the Tactical Air Command's T-28 Trojan. The T-38 was designed to be a rugged aircraft with a high degree of aggressiveness and handling similar to the T-33.
The T-38 was the first large jet trainer aircraft designed and built in the United States. The first T-38s rolled off Northrop's assembly line on Jan. 5, 1961. The aircraft was designed around a General Electric J85-GE-5 engine, with the first production units being delivered in 1961. The T-38 was later outfitted with the General Electric J79-GE-19 in 1964 and the Allison J79-GE-27 in 1966. The first T-38As went into production in 1965; the model was updated with the General Electric J79-GE-29 in 1972. A total of 1,107 T-38As were built. Production of the T-38A and T-38C was completed in 1972 and 1971, respectively. The T-38A was the basic trainer; the T-38C was equipped with some changes for advanced pilot training. The T-38 is operated by the Air Education and Training Command at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz. It is also used by the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB, Calif., and by NASA at the Johnson Space Center for astronaut training. The T-38 was a primary platform for the space shuttle's first crew for the first three launches. The last T-38 mission was in 1984. At that point, the T-38 was replaced by the larger T-38A. The T-38A was removed from service in 1991 when the space shuttles were retired. The T-38A was replaced by the AT-38, which was an improved T-38A. Production of the AT-38 began in 1992 and the last aircraft was delivered in 1997. Two AT-38s were used as chase planes on the flights of the space shuttle Challenger and Columbia.General CharacteristicsPrimary Function: Advanced jet pilot trainerBuilder: Northrop Corp.Power Plant: 827ec27edc
