In other words, we may be moving in the direction of a culture of extended reading and, for those who are able to do so, an expanded culture of reference. It is thus not surprising that, over the past decade or so and despite the German collapse of classical studies and the emergence of two related genres of professional writing -- journal articles and popular books -- classics are again at the center of creative activity. In this year, for example, the second of two big series of volumes of DIE HORIZONTEN (an important new short-lived journal) concerns classic studies. It has been edited by three outstanding scholars: Hans-Peter Seesemann, Hans van Merent and Marianne Böhme. In their introduction to the current issue, the editors speak of a movement of the written word as " reclaiming the oral text in many more contexts than in the 20th century." They go on to quote what, in my view, is the most exciting development of the past generation: the explosion in the study of everyday life in antiquity; the debate about ancient perceptions of "text and context"; the interaction of these issues with the fields of neurobiology and cognitive psychology; and, of course, with technology itself. They make a persuasive case for texts being not only encyclopedic but also, for all the authors they cite, involving active reading in the sense of giving a human voice to a human presence, not merely recording human discourse. One of the texts discussed is the role of music in ancient cultures. It covers how music can be played (did the Greek symphonist enjoy his work?) and how it was performed (was the Greek harpist whom we can see on a British coin called to play while the image of Athena looks on?). It also covers the significance of memory and the human desire to "reclaim" the past. Meanwhile, others are studying ancient texts in the context of empirical study of memory and consciousness. These range from the thoughts of Aristotle, Lucretius and Augustine about dreaming to research that examines effects of dream deprivation on the ways in which people are aware of their dreams and on empathy and on the effect of sudden trauma on the ways in which people "remember... the events" preceding it. All of these essays are testimonies to the continued vitality of classical scholarship.
