Due to the film's success, Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge was made into a prequel, Mujhse Kuch Khatte Karoge (2009), with Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali Khan and Vir Das in lead roles. The film was a hit at the box-office as well, with a sequel, Mujhse Kuch Naa Karoge (2011), being released.[6]

Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge is a romantic comedy with family elements, revolving around the problems of a local don, played by Raghav Juyal, and his son. His daughter, played by Vidya Balan, runs away from home to marry a boy of her choice. However, a local don's daughter, played by Preity Zinta, is against this as they both belong to the same caste. The film portrays the story of the don and his son traveling to the city to reclaim his ancestral land. The don is accompanied by his wife (Janaki Menon), whom he loves, and by his servant, played by Kabir Bedi. They travel with their daughter, who has married a boy from a wealthy background. However, the don is shocked to find out that the boy is actually his son.

The movie is a remake of the American film Art, starring Robert Downey Jr., which also starred Preity Zinta, and which was itself based on French playwright Jean Cocteau's play The Human Voice.

The movie was released theatrically across the United States on May 13, 2014 by Masters in Cinema and was screened at several international festivals including Toronto International Film Festival and Mumbai International Film Festival.[6]

The movie was a huge hit at the box office. It was a moderate hit.The movie was distributed in India by Y-Films and in the US by Lightworks. It was released in the US on the 20th of August, 2004. It received $9,150,345 U.S. (1,355,263 worldwide gross) at the box office in 2004.[2]

The film came with a controversy when it was released. T-Series, the makers of the film, refused to release its music on the religious day of Eid-ul-Fitr. In an attempt to appeal to the public, the makers released the music as a paid download. However, the songs managed to make it on to the radio airwaves.
