Digital image processing, on the other hand, offers several advantages. The most obvious is that the images are easily available for review at any time and place. The main disadvantage is that digital acquisition systems are much more expensive than their analogue equivalents, and the digital systems can be complex and unreliable. While maintaining digital image processing with low-cost hardware is a challenge, keeping the system functional and reliable is a greater one.

From a radiographic perspective, these limitations do not seem to have been a major concern. Retrieving the digital images from the machines is only a minor inconvenience, and the cost of acquiring and maintaining the software is somewhat offset by the decreased cost of film processing. Digital image processors are also much easier to supervise remotely, and they generate far fewer quality control issues (see table 4).

After carefully examining the pros and cons of each technology, our concerns about reliability, after-sales service, and training were much less in the case of digital imaging. Our major concern was the cost: how much we could afford to pay to install and equip a digital system.

As with other decisions in the acquisition and processing chain, this decision was not easy. It took us a long time to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the two technologies, and to decide which paths to follow. The difficulties we encountered in deciding between digital and analogue systems were somewhat similar to those we would face in choosing a digital X-ray system. The decision was made easier because we know the capabilities of our analogue systems are declining, and therefore we already have a clear view of the advantages and disadvantages of digital.

The cost of analogue systems is also important. The cost of the systems themselves (hardware and software) and the cost of consumables is relatively low for the equipment we use. However, the cost of the system itself is not low. In contrast, the cost of digital systems is relatively high. While the cost of the equipment itself is low, we found the cost of the software to be very high. Until recently, the cost of the software was roughly equal to the cost of the hardware, making it difficult to justify the purchase.
