Some of the new features include a new currency system, additional plants and animals, a new jobs menu and new business directory which is shareable with other players. Businesses require buildings, capital, land and workers to operate. Buildings provide a home for factories, offices, banks, temples, hospitals, stores, restaurants, theaters, bars, banks, etc. Capital is the money players exchange for goods and services. Land, which determines the maximum size of the residential and commercial areas that players can build on, dictates the proximity of other developments.

Plants and animals increase the number of potentially useful items that each player can harvest at any given time and thus reduce the time it takes to gain the items needed to develop further in the game. With the point of each new level being to cover a certain amount of land, the more land a player has the more production he or she can achieve with the same amount of space and this is the same for each player.

In more traditional systems like Capitalism the production of various items requires several different resources. In addition to the actual goods from farming, mining, foraging and a whole host of other things that players can do, they could also obtaint the raw materials for those goods from other players. In Capitalism Lab a player's available labor is the one resource that is truly unlimited and the same resources can be tapped as needed to generate the goods players want. For this reason the production of every good has become independent of its source and can be produced by anyone in the world.

In order to start a business, the first thing that players need is some capital. Capital bought and sold in the free market, which is perfectly acceptable but should not be underestimated for its ability to bring about the most happiness for the poorest players of the world.
